This is a 7 motor drive system upgrade for a rotogravure printing press. All drives are controlled by an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix programmable automation controller. Drive coordination is accomplished over the high-speed ControlNet network. The drives are Reliance Flexpak 3000 digital DC drives. Bus bars are used extensively to distribute power to the drives and auxiliary motors on the press. The photo on the left shows the main power distribution assembly where individual circuit breakers provide protection to remote mounted isolation transformers that feed each drive. The photo on the right shows how the push buttons, selector switches, and pilot lights for the operator stations along the press are wired to A-B 1734 Point I/O which communicate with the ControlLogix processor over DeviceNet. Utilizing remote I/O on this application significantly reduced installation wiring materials and labor and resulted in the machine being able to be up and running in the shortest time possible.
