This system replaces an obsolete Davis-Standard 501 extrusion controller. It mounts inside the existing control system on the enclosure door and faces inside the enclosure. Four holes are drilled in the enclosure door to mount the new control system. The existing wiring is easily connected to the new system. In addition to the temperature controls functions of the 501, all pressure and speed control functions are integrated into the ControlLogix controller. This eliminates other discrete devices such as pressure controllers, potentiometers, meters, and hardwired switches and push buttons. The wiring complexity is simplified and control performance and reliability is enhanced. A-B Flex analog and digital modules are used to connect to existing thermocouples, pressure transducers, switches and sensors, and solid state relays. The Flex I/O communicate with the ControlLogix processor via ControlNet. The system features Ethernet communications allowing for many connectivity options for data logging and archiving, connecting to higher level HMI and SCADA systems, and data exchange with plant database networks. System visualization via web browser can be provided which makes it possible for anyone to monitor the operation of the system.
The operator interface, an Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus 1250, mounts on the enclosure door and faces outside the existing control system enclosure door. A custom bezel is provided that allows the PanelView to mount in the same cutout as the 501 controller. No additional cutting of the enclosure door is necessary. The PanelView communicates to the ControlLogix processor via Ethernet providing reliable, fast screen updates.
